Michigan manufacturer Caster Concepts invests in local talent,
promotes Jackson resident to director of sales

ALBION, MI – Committed to growing homegrown talent, Caster Concepts, a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty industrial casters and wheels, named Doug Backinger, a Jackson native, its director of sales.

Backinger joined Caster Concepts as a college intern and then as a full-time member of its engineering team after graduating from the University of Michigan. He left the company to work for the manufacturer Alcoa in New Jersey for a few years before returning home.

“The trend is to move to a big city,” Backinger said. “If people are willing to live in a smaller town, there are always great opportunities.”

Developing the local pool of talent remains a Caster Concepts priority. The company invests in paid internships for high school and college students. It recently launched Innovate Albion, a STEM and robotics nonprofit designed to nurture students interested in science and technology.

The company purchased a 100-year-old Masonic temple in downtown Albion and is in the process of converting it into a 15,000-square-foot robotics and engineering center. The Innovation Hub will provide classes, workshop space and a robotics field for students to test their creations.

“The challenge smaller communities like Albion have is supplying good jobs that keep our brightest and most talented from chasing opportunities in other communities,” said Bill Dobbins, president and CEO of Caster Concepts. “By developing our local talent, we have a better chance of boosting the local economy with people vested in the community.”

As the director of sales, Backinger will develop strategies to help grow the business and develop a team of inside and outside sales reps. Before joining Caster Concepts, he spent three years working in quality engineering for a division of Alcoa that made castings for jet engines.

Backinger received a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and a master’s in engineering from the University of Michigan.
