Albion is
located in the southern portion of Michigan between Detroit and
Chicago, exits 121 and 124 on Interstate-94, the major expressway
linking these two Midwest Metropolis'. Lansing, the state capital of
Michigan, lies only 50 miles north along M-99.
When you visit Albion, plan
on including some of these activities and attractions which bring in
visitors from throughout the area:
Gardner House Museum -
phone 517-629-5100. Located at 509 Superior St., on M-99 south of
the business district. The museum is in the National Register of
Historic Places and preserves and displays the heritage of Albion.
Open Saturdays and Sundays 2 to 4 p.m. from Mother's Day through
last weekend in September. Admission Free.
Albion Public Library -
phone 517-629-3993. 501 S. Superior St. Built in 1918 with funds
from Andrew C. Carnegie.
Albion's Historic Walkway
- phone 517-629-5533. Developed by the Albion Bicentennial
Commission, this walkway takes you around and across the river to
many registered historic landmarks. Albion's historic brick main
street -- first laid in 1903 and reconstructed with hand-laid,
kiln-fired clay bricks in 1993. The walk guides you through the
historic commercial district.
Holy Ascension Orthodox Church
- phone 517-629-6345. 810 Austin Ave. Built in 1916. Albion's
Russian community came shortly after the turn of the century to
work at the Albion Malleable Iron Company.
Riverside Cemetery -
Established in 1837. Tours are given by Albion Historian Frank
Passic, 517-629-5402.
Albion College Observatory
- phone 517-629-1000. Built in 1883, the observatory still harbors
its original telescope, circle, side-real and chronograph. It is
one of the oldest actively used telescopes in the country.
Bobbitt Visual Arts Center
- phone 517-629-1000. Located on the campus of Albion College,
features the work of nationally known artists.
Whitehouse Nature Center -
phone 517-629-1000. 135 acres of natural habitat administered by
Albion College as an outdoor education center. Bordering the
Kalamazoo River, the Nature Center has six self-guided trails
featuring 400 species of plants, 160 species of birds and an
interpretive center. It is open to the public at no fee.
Kids 'N' Stuff - phone
517-629-7304. 301 S. Superior St. An Interactive Experience for
Kids, built on imagination, powered by play. Become a part of the
arts, history, science and society through mentally and physically
engaging exhibits.
Starr Commonwealth - phone
517-629-5591. 13725 Starr Commonwealth Rd. Starr has been
nationally known as a pioneer in the human services industry
through programs dedicated to serving children and families in
need. Starr offers two museums; a Chapel-in-the-Woods; and the
Loft, a 3000 square foot indoor climbing facility. Open Monday -
Friday during regular business hours.
Brueckner Museum and Gladstone
Cottage - phone 517-629-5591. 13725 Starr Commonwealth Rd.
Located on the campus of Starr Commonwealth, the museum features
authentic Victorian furniture, paintings, and sculpture.
